Important Event
Fiesta de Guadalupe, also known as the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a significant religious and cultural celebration in Mexico and other parts of the world. December 12 is the anniversary of the day on which Juan Diego, an Aztec peasant, is said to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary, who ordered him to go and tell the Bishop of Mexico to build a church on that spot.
Pilgrims from all over Mexico travel to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where the miraculous image of the Virgin is enshrined. The celebration showcases a blend of indigenous traditions and Catholic faith, emphasizing the cultural and spiritual significance of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexican identity.
The Mexican devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is associated with accounts of apparitions to Juan Diego in 1531. It is distinct from the older Spanish devotion bearing the same name.
