Happy Islamic New Year

Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the new Islamic lunar calendar year. This calendar is based on the lunar cycle, unlike the Gregorian calendar which is solar-based. The Islamic calendar consists of 12 months but is shorter than the Gregorian calendar by about 10 to 12 days.

The Islamic New Year starts with the month of Muharram, which is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. The year count was initiated when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra. This migration was a significant turning point in Islamic history as it led to the establishment of the first Muslim community based on Islamic principles.

Observances of the Islamic New Year vary among different Muslim communities. In many regions, it’s a time for quiet reflection, prayer and remembrance rather than festive celebration. Muslims reflect on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life, and consider the Hijra as a moment to learn about resilience, faith and the importance of community. In some countries, the day is marked by official holidays and may include public speeches, sermons, or special religious events focused on the historical significance of the Hijra.
