Arepas

These arepas are made with mozzarella cheese and are a quick and easy recipe perfect as a side dish, a quick meal, or breakfast. This recipe makes six arepas.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 1 cup pre-cooked white cornmeal (we recommend P.A.N.)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt (you can adjust to your liking)
  • Cooking spray

Directions

  1. Mix water, cornmeal, mozzarella cheese, butter, and salt in a large bowl. Knead until well combined and you have a soft dough.
  2. Form dough into balls about the size of a medium orange. Place each ball between two sheets of plastic wrap and flatten with a rolling pin to the preferred thickness.
  3. Leaving the plastic wrap in place, press the top edge of a drinking glass into the surface of the dough to make circles. Remove the plastic wrap and any excess dough.
  4. Spray a griddle or skillet with cooking spray and set to medium-high heat.
  5. Cook arepas in batches until golden brown, approximately five minutes per side.

Pro Tip: If the dough is too dry, add a little more water. If it feels too moist, add more cornmeal.
