Sleep & Recovery
Seasonal Energy Dips (Including SAD)
For many people, something shifts in autumn. Energy drops, motivation decreases, sleep gets heavier but less restorative, and getting going in the morning becomes harder. The tendency is to push through and wait for spring. But what's happening has a physiological basis, and there are practical things you can do about it, beyond just tolerating it. The Seasonal Biology Human beings, like most mammals, have circadian and seasonal rhythms tied...
Travel, Time Zones, and Work Performance
You land after a cross-country or international flight, check into your hotel, and have a 9 a.m. meeting the next morning. Your body thinks it's 3 a.m. Your brain is running on fumes. And you're expected to be sharp. Jet lag is more than just feeling tired. It's a genuine physiological mismatch between your internal clock and the local time. Understanding what's happening makes it easier to manage. What Jet Lag Actually Is Your circadian rhy...
Building a Night Routine That Actually Works
The internet is full of elaborate bedtime routines: 12-step wind-down protocols, $100 supplements, hour-long rituals that assume you have no other obligations. Most working adults can't sustain any of that. What actually helps is just consistency. A simple, repeatable sequence that signals to your brain that sleep is coming is more effective than a perfect routine you do occasionally. Why Routine Matters Biologically Your brain uses contextu...
Why Sleep Impacts Mood and Focus
Most people know that poor sleep makes you tired. What's less appreciated is the specific way sleep shapes how you think, feel, and interact with others, and why this matters for work performance beyond just feeling groggy. What Happens in the Brain During Sleep Sleep is not passive downtime. During sleep, particularly during deep slow-wave sleep and REM sleep, the brain consolidates memories, processes emotional experiences, clears metabolic w...
Recovering from a Bad Night of Sleep
You didn't sleep well. Maybe you lay awake for hours, woke up at 3 a.m. and couldn't get back down, or simply ran out of time. Either way, you have a full day ahead. The temptation is to either push through as if nothing happened or write the day off entirely. Neither is the most useful response. Here's a more practical approach. What's Actually Impaired After poor sleep, the cognitive functions that take the biggest hit are working memory, ...

However, as of July 2024, Microsoft has changed this behaviour for security and privacy reasons. Now, when you add a website using the “Website” tab, it will open in a new browser tab instead of within the Teams interface
