Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM) is observed every November in Canada to recognize and raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by Indigenous peoples with disabilities. Established in 2015 by the British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS), IDAM highlights the intersection of disability and the systemic barriers Indigenous communities often face, such as limited access to healthcare, education, and employment. It also celebrates the contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples with disabilities.
The month encourages governments, organizations, and communities to work toward greater accessibility and inclusion while addressing issues like social stigma and inequality. IDAM is recognized by multiple provinces and territories, as well as by advocacy groups and disability organizations. Through events, discussions, and storytelling, IDAM builds a deeper understanding of the importance of equity and cultural sensitivity in supporting Indigenous peoples with disabilities.
