Intersex Awareness Day aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of intersex issues and the challenges faced by intersex individuals. Intersex people are born with variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.

The day serves as an opportunity to advocate for the rights and dignity of intersex people, raise awareness about the harmful practices of non-consensual medical interventions on intersex children, and work towards ending discrimination and stigmatization.

The community’s first public demonstration was in October 1996 outside of the American Academy of Pediatrics annual conference. Two activists were to deliver an address suggesting the best course of action for those living as intersex.

Events, discussions, and educational activities are organized worldwide to shed light on the unique experiences of intersex individuals and to promote inclusivity and respect for intersex people and variations in sex characteristics.
