Arab American Heritage Month

National Arab American Heritage Month recognizes and honors the contributions of Arab Americans to the country’s cultural, social, and political fabric. It aims to raise awareness about the rich heritage, traditions, and diversity of Arab American communities. Throughout the month, various events, exhibitions, and educational programs take place to highlight the achievements and history of Arab Americans, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of their role in American society.

Starting in the 1990s, Arab American heritage was celebrated in different states. However, it wasn’t until 2017 when it became a national initiative and April 2021 when it was proclaimed by the U.S. Department of State.

How to Celebrate It

Read books written by Arab Americans: Arab American authors have impacted global literature with their works and unique perspectives and lived experiences. Some suggestions include: “The Prophet” by Khalil Gibran, “Out of Place” by Edward Said and “How Does It Feel to Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America” by Moustafa Bayoumi.

Watch an Arab American documentary: Learning about other cultures is empowering. Watch any of these powerful documentaries this month: American Arab or A Thousand And One Journeys: The Arab Americans.

Visit Cultural Exhibitions: Explore exhibitions or virtual galleries showcasing Arab American art, literature, and historical contributions.

Learning about Anti-Arab bigotry and how to eradicate it is important as an employee and a human being. This month, focus on challenging prejudices or stereotypes in the workplace and beyond.
