National Minority Health Month raises awareness of minority health and healthcare disparities that affect people of color. This month, early detection and control of complications of these diseases are emphasized. Help build awareness about premature death and illness of people from minority groups. This month originated with the creation of National Negro Health Week by Booker T. Washington in 1915. It wasn’t until 2002 that the month received support from Congress to become a monthly observance in the United States.
A variety of activities and initiatives are undertaken throughout the month to promote public health, wellness and health education among marginalized communities. These include health fairs, educational workshops, social media campaigns and partnerships with community organizations, health care providers, and government agencies. The goal is to create a platform for dialogue, share best practices, and highlight effective strategies for improving health outcomes. Each year, the month is centered around a specific theme that focuses on pressing health issues relevant to minority populations.
