July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the unique mental health struggles faced by minority communities in the United States. It’s a month of solidarity, education, and support for those who have felt unheard and underserved in the mental health world.
This special month was first initiated by Bebe Moore Campbell, an author and co-founder of NAMI Urban Los Angeles. Her tireless work to end the stigma surrounding mental health has impacted people all over the world. In 2008, the House of Representatives designated July as the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, ensuring that her legacy lives on.
To celebrate this month of mental health awareness, people are encouraged to share videos, pictures, graphics, and poems on social media using the hashtag #DepthOfMyIdentity. Let’s show our support for all those who have struggled with mental illness and substance abuse disorders in the minority communities.
