This day commemorates the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621-1675), the ninth Sikh Guru, who was executed in Delhi on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. He was the leader of Sikhs from 1665 until his death in 1675. He is remembered for giving his life to protect the freedom to practice one’s own religion. He was also a poet who published nearly 115 hymns that became the basis for the Guru Granth Sahib, the main text of the Sikh faith.
