Important Event Observance begins at sunset, the evening before the first full day of holiday.
This day commemorates the arrest, torture, imprisonment, and eventual execution of the Bab in Tabriz, Persia, in 1850. The Bab’s body is buried at the Bahá’í temple in Haifa, Israel. This is one of the nine holy days when Bahá’ís refrain from work and school. At his death, the Bab was only 30 years old. He was charged with the rejection of a religious belief.
For years after his death, his followers would transport his body to ensure that his remains were not desecrated. He later was laid to rest in the Shrine of the Báb in Haifa on the middle terrace of the Bahá’í Gardens. Today, people read from the Tablets of Visitation, a Bahá’í scripture.
