This French-Canadian meat pie is essential for all holidays that fall in the winter. It is always served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound ground pork
- 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced in inch cubes
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning or to taste
- enough pastry for a 2-crust pie
Instructions
Put the ground beef, ground pork, potatoes, and onions in a large pan with enough water to barely cover. Bring to the boil and then simmer until the potatoes are soft enough to mash. At this point drain and mash. Cool and season to taste with salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning. Line a 9-inch pie dish with pastry and fill with the mixture. Cover with more pastry, making some slits in the top to let out steam. Bake in a 375°F oven until crust is done. Can be done ahead of time and frozen until needed. Serve hot. Serves 6-8.
