Important Event
The Nativity of the Theotokos commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary, who is considered to be the Mother of God (Theotokos). This falls on September 8 in the Gregorian Calendar, but September 21 in the Julian calendar. According to tradition, Mary’s parents, Joachim and Anna, were barren, but through divine intervention, they miraculously conceived and gave birth to Mary.
The feast is marked by special special services, prayers, and processions, where believers express their devotion to the Virgin Mary and acknowledge her unique role in salvation history.
Interesting Facts:
- Orthodox Christians don’t believe the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
- While the belief of whether she ever sinned or not varies, it is agreed that she was cleansed from sin at the Annunciation, when she discovered that she would bear a son.
- Mary’s birth is seen as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the preparation for the coming of the Messiah. The feast emphasizes the intimate connection between Mary’s life and the redemptive work of Christ, highlighting her role in God’s plan for the salvation of humanity.
