For October’s Heritage Spotlight, we’re heading to Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern India. With Diwali coming up and Hindu Heritage Month being recognized throughout October, it’s the perfect time to explore a place that’s deeply tied to both history and tradition.
Why It’s Special
Hampi was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, a powerful South Indian kingdom known for its architecture, trade, and culture. Today, the site is filled with massive stone temples, open-air markets, old royal buildings, and stories that go back hundreds of years.
But it’s not just a place you visit and forget. Many of Hampi’s temples are still active, and the stories behind them, from Hindu epics like the Ramayana, are still told today, especially during festivals like Diwali.

Things to Check Out
- Virupaksha Temple: One of the oldest working temples in India, where people still come to pray
- Vittala Temple: Famous for its carved stone chariot and musical pillars that actually make sound
- Sunset Spots: Hemakuta Hill and Matanga Hill are both great places to sit, breathe, and take it all in
- Hanuman’s Story: Anjaneya Hill, just outside Hampi, is believed to be his birthplace

Planning Your Visit
Hampi is in the state of Karnataka, and October is a great time to go. The weather’s dry and clear after the monsoon. It’s a bit off the usual tourist path, but that’s part of what makes it special. You won’t just be walking through ruins – you’ll be stepping into a place where history, belief, and everyday life still meet.
